Footwear company Zellerfeld has partnered with designer Heron Preston, to manufacture a unique sneaker line. Calling it the “HERON01,” this slip-on running shoe has a seamless, circular design with no stitching or adhesives, allowing it to be fully recycled at the end of its use. The sneakers materials can be reused endlessly, but only a small number of pairs are being sold via a StockX raffle, so only a chosen few will get to sample them. Zellerfeld uses 3D printing to develop experimental footwear with novel unibody designs, that can be customized to meet individual wearers’ needs.

CEO Cornelius Shmitt gained industrial engineering experience from studying at the Clausthal University of Technology. By adopting his approach, he says that upcoming designers can enter short-run production without having to pay upfront for molds, or outsourcing production. Zellerfeld also markets its technology as a greener alternative to conventional footwear production processes, with the defense that 3D printed shoes are created with software, not assembly lines. The HERON01 is modeled to look like its namesake in the natural world. The sneaker’s scale-like aesthetics are meant to mimic those of a Heron’s feet, while the sole features a claw-life design. It has been reported that a limited run of the sneakers will later be made available via Zellerfeld this month.

Hadar Slassi has introduced a pair of shoes that are a blend of digital and traditional planning. They are a merge of five layers that form the skeleton of the shoes, which are both lightweight and durable. They are created using an originative shoe layering compound method that retraces the known base hierarchy of function and shape in shoe layers. It combines addictive manufacturing 3D printed SLS mold of natural web cracked earth patterns, with traditional wet molding vesicle forms. These “walk of mind” shoes are a compound of five stratas. Strata is a geological term that describes the fundamental Earth unit and replaces the tern layer. The design process begins by using a digital scan of a certain foot. The design can be adjusted to any foot, allowing for it to be a better fit for consumers. A lot of the influence comes from spiritual, yet Earthly ground. Not only is it amazing to see 3D printed shoes, but I love seeing the unique ideas that are created using the method.

The Adidas 4D, a 3D printed cushioning solution informed by data, promised unrivaled tuning for an individual’s needs. The first proposition of the technology was the Adidas FUTURECRAFT back in 2017, which is set to return on March 19th of this year. The model was highly coveted by UltraBOOST and NMD, but it boasted a high price tag with limited quantities. Its “Core Black” Primeknit upper, grey profile stripes, and “Linen Green” sole put Adidas’ proposition on countless “grail” lists. Over the last few years, the brand’s 3D printed cushioning has emerged on many silhouettes, at a reduced price point, leading to exchange BOOST for 4D tooling. Many collectors paid a pretty penny on the aftermarket but keep an eye out for this 3D shoe towards the end of this month. It is another beautiful innovation in the world of 3D printed shoes.

A Norwich clinic recently became the first in the UK to manufacture 3D printed insoles, to help with lower limb pain and injury. BxClinic has an in-house 3D printer to manufacture medical orthotic insoles and is running a trial for patients. Clinical director and specialist Ian Sadler stated that materials used to be too brittle and absorbed moisture. Now you can 3D print with materials that can be both soft and hard in the same insole, without taking up too much space. Because of this, they will be able to change how they help patients, including those who suffer from shin splints, knee pain, or bunions. It even goes as far as helping those who may have backaches and hip pain. The clinic is located in Thorpe Road, Norwich. 3D printed shoes don’t need to just be used to improve performance; we can use them to improve physical health as well.

Lore has recently introduced the LoreOne, the world’s first 3D printed hard-shelled shoe. The shoe’s multiple breakthroughs in design, biomechanics, and manufacturing reinvent what a cycling shoe can be. The LoreOne utilizes scan-to-print carbon technology that is sculpted precisely to the cyclists’ feet. The carbon monocoque design will create a more direct connection between rider and bicycle than conventional shoes while producing increased watt output and pedaling efficiency. The Lore team comprises individuals from sport, footwear, consumer technology, and aerospace. The levels of customization, performance, materials, environmental, sustainability, and manufacturing technology represent a bold leap into the future.

Through the development of the LoreOne, Lore partnered with Colby Pearce and Olympian. Elite bicycle coach and fitter. The technology, materials, design, and manufacturing are way ahead of everything else on the market. The LoreOne shoe will change the way people interact with their bikes, and I cannot wait to see what it does to the 3D printed footwear market.

Online shopping in Canada practically doubles last year due to the pandemic. But one thing people seem to have trouble purchasing properly is shoes. Due to the pandemic, retailers are closed, and people have to buy shoes online. It’s a hassle for customers and stores, so a start-up company created an app called the Xesto Fit to help with this issue. The Xesto Fit app uses an iPhone’s true depth camera to accurately measure the size of your feet. You take photos from various angles and it calculates the proper size within one and a half millimeters. There is a database of 150 shoe brands it compares your foot to, and it can make a size recommendation.

The app is free for consumers and the company is working with shoe retailers to incorporate the app into their websites. The Xesto Fit app is already being downloaded and used around the world, to help people get the correct size of their feet and a comfortable pair of shoes. 3D printed shoes are all about trying to find the best-fitting footwear for consumers. Having an app like this will help out, especially while the pandemic is still going on.

Thrive Orthopedics debuted it’s very own 3D printed orthoses called the Balance 3D+ Brace. The brace helps reduce postural sway and increases postural stability. These orthotics line the sole of one’s foot, while also bracing the heel and calf for additional support. Thrive 3D, a 3D scanning and design app, allows users to customize their orthoses. The app will become available alongside the brace in March of this year. Thrive will also be introducing a 3D printed, articulating AFO for patients with adult acquired flatfoot along with an articulating AFO for patients that need additional off-loading. The brace is further notable for its carbon fiber design. Thrive selected a light, durable and flexible material with which to share its orthoses. The device is secured by a concealed strapping mechanism between and inner and outer wall. The mechanism is specifically designed to allow easy use for customers who may have dexterity issues.

All of Thrive’s products are printed using HP’s MJF 4200 with nylon 12 material. All designs are reviewed and certified by a licensed pedorthist before being printed. The material is a sturdy material with high tensile strength and the ability to flex without fracture. Thrive’s printing facility has built up experience printing high-performance parts for the US Military and has implemented extensive quality assurance protocols to ensure durability. Products like this not only help with 3D printed shoes but help improve them as well.

Voxeljet, a company I have mentioned in the past, is producing footwear with the help of AM materials and systems. Their newest product is the Coral Runner which is a printed sneaker made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Voxeljet’s plan is for their shoe to help with three challenges the shoe industry is facing. Individualization, where customers share the value of customized shoes that almost perfectly fit their needs. Sustainability, with the market demanding more easily recyclable materials. And lastly, automation, where small quantities may be affordable and effectively produced. The Coral Runner emphasizes innovation and customizability. The shoe’s inspiration came from coral, which builds itself through additive sedimentation. The advantage of 3D printed shoes is both on-demand manufacturing, and the one-to-one transfer of the digital model to a real object.

Choosing TPU to use as the material made sense, because it can be very soft and elastic, or very hard and durable. Specific build areas may be dyed more deeply by specifically controlling the volume of the absorber into the powder bed. By using industrial inkjet print heads, it is thus possible to print different grey scales within one layer, establishing different properties in each layer. Voxeljet is working to combine the customizability of older forms of shoe production with the mass production models of twentieth-century consumerism.
