Many people like buying shoes, wearing shoes, and even collecting shoes. Not very many people decide to create their own but Nick Unis, who we have mentioned before on 3DShoes.com, is doing just that. Before college Unis had an interest in sneakers where he and his brother would buy special edition Nikes and sell them at higher prices. They then transitioned into customizing pairs of shoes, until they were eventually given a cease-and-desist from Nike. Four years later Nick created a shoe company where every single shoe is 3D printed and made out of entirely recyclable material. First, they design everything on a computer first. Then they are split up into components and either 3D print or 3D knit the shoe. He learned how to fully utilize a 3D printer to grow his company.

Most printers weren’t able to affordably create a flexible fabric, so Nick had to create his own machine and software. Unis uses ground-up plastic bottles and natural rubber to create his shoe. By melting down the plastic, he is able to force the material into a thread, which allows him to create the fabric and laces he uses. From there each part of the shoe is 3D printed layer by layer with the outsole being covered in the rubber. Because Unis’ shoes are made from 100-percent recyclable material and eco-friendly, he is able to guarantee that his products won’t end up in a landfill or the ocean. Unis brands only prints when a pair of 3D printed shoes are ordered. So, you will only see a select number of pairs during Fashion Week.

They start off by taking the longest and widest point of your left and right shoe. You then get to add color and graphics to a footwear model of your choice. Afterward, your shoe is 3D printed and shipped out approximately 24-72 hours after you place your order. Their footwear is 100 percent recyclable, so you can send your worn 3D printed footwear back and receive 10 perfect off a future purchase. Your old footwear will be made into new footwear.

UnisBrands 3D Printed Shoes

A student at Penn State, Nicholas Unis has turned his passion for footwear into a business idea. Not only being a finance and accounting student, he is also the founder if UnisBrands; a fashion label that designs, produces, and sells 3D printed shoes. Even though he is a young man, Unis already has significant experience when it comes to footwear. He worked at a shoe store in high school, and in customizing and reselling shoes on the Internet. Since that time he has focused his shoe business ambitions into 3D printed shoes. He even designed his own customized 3D printing after finding existing models did not meet requirements. The 3D printing technology is capable of 3D printing sneakers in three parts; the sole, upper, and tongue. Nicholas plans to use the technology to create various styles of shoes with customized colors, patterns, and sizes. For sizing, he relies on a special algorithm, which uses the client’s foot, dimensions and generates a “perfect fit” 3D model.

Once his technology is fully up and running he plans to have a rapid turnaround time for custom orders. The goal is for the 3D Printed shoes to be shipped within 24 to 72 hours of the order being placed. UnisBrands website currently has a limited selection of 3D printed shoe styles, but Unis plans to expand his company’s offering in the future. His next plan is to introduce s Birkenstock inspired sandal just in time for the summer season. Currently, UnisBrands is operating from within the Happy Valley Launchbox, a working space for startups in State College, PA. Nicholas hopes to one day set up 3D printing factories across Pennsylvania to meet order demands and keep all his production local. Another possibility is to partner with organizations such as the NCAA or Disney for licensing agreements to produce customized branded 3D printed shoes.
